The HPCSA would like to make practitioners aware of an alleged “Hawks investigator” targeting foreign-registered practitioners by claiming that they are being investigated. Part of the scam involves using fake correspondence on HPCSA stationary claiming that the recipient is under investigation. The criminals then demand money from the victim to avoid arrest.
Council is currently collating all the information and will report the matter to the South African Police Service (SAPS). Practitioners who have fallen victim to this alleged Hawks’ investigator are urged to report the matter to SAPS and verify any letters that have been received from the HPCSA Inspectorate Office.
Falling under the ambit of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), the primary role of the Inspectorate Office is ensuring that registered healthcare practitioners comply with the provisions of the Act, as well as all rules and regulations governing the practitioners.
The office has 11 inspectors including the Head of the Division and four regional offices in Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, and East London:
