Payroll officer Mashudu Haji gives us a glimpse of the real person behind the efficient individual who ensures that we all get paid!
In this edition of On The Ground (OTG) we profile Mashudu Rebecca Haji, the Payroll Officer in the Human Resources Division. She was born and bred in Thohoyandou Ha Mutoti.
Tell us about your name, Mashudu?
Mashudu means luck, so when I am called by that name I feel showered with good luck.
When and where did you complete your first post-matric qualification?
In 2002 at the University of Venda.
What did you study?
Bachelor of Commerce (Information Systems)
Tell us about your first job.
It was in August 2004, I was an Intern at Oracle Corporation South Africa.
What time does your day start during the week?
My day actually starts at 5:30.
Why so early?
Duh?! I have kids to take care of! (laughs).
What is the very first thing you do when you get into the office?
I pray, though I pray at home (laughs) – I don’t know if I will get fired for praying in the office.
Tell us about your role in the department.
I make sure that people’s salaries are paid on time. There is a lot that happens in this office, but the main purpose is payroll administration.
What do you find most challenging regarding this position?
This role is (pauses in deep thought) human orientated, so the challenge is dealing with different types of people. As much as it is challenging, I embrace the challenge.
What do you fear the most in life?
I don’t know, I take every challenge as it comes!
If you could, what would you change about your life?
Nothing
When you are not working, how do you spend your free time?
I spend most of my time shopping. Once a month I have a weekend that is dedicated to me, so that is my “me time.”
Marital status, are you single, married or in a relationship?
I’m married and happy.
What is your ideal romantic gesture?
Mmm, someone opening the car door for me.
Table Mountain or Victoria Falls?
I have been to Table Mountain, but I’ve never been to Victoria Falls, so Victoria Falls it is.
Music, what genre do you listen to?
I listen to Gospel music.
Entertainment: movies or soap operas?
Movies.
Sports: soccer or rugby?
None of the above.
What is your favourite dish?
Delele (a traditional vegetarian Venda dish). This will make people laugh!
White or red wine?
Red wine.
Tea or coffee?
Water, it’s cheaper.
What is your motto in life?
Life is too short, live to the fullest, and never give up. It doesn’t matter how many times you fall but how many times you get up.
