The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) embarked on an “off site registration campaign that took place on 20 November to 19 December 2014.
The aim of the campaign was to make registration simple and faster for all interns and community service practitioners as a result reducing the traffic flow at the walk in centre at the Council’s Head Office.
Registration took place at numerous medical universities throughout the country. Gauteng was the first province to get the ball rolling with registration occurring at the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg. The campaign then made its way across the provinces to the Western Cape, with sites at the University of the Western Cape, Stellenbosch University, and University of Cape Town. The registration went through to KwaZulu Natal at the Durban University of Technology, the Free State at the University Free State, Limpopo at the University of Limpopo.
Lastly, the campaign drew to an end in the Eastern Cape, with registration sites at The Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital (Mthatha) and Dorah Nginza Hospital in (Port Elizabeth).
During the off- site registration Council seized the opportunity by conducting symposiums in Pietermaritzburg and Port Elizabeth. The symposiums focused on a brief overview of the HPCSA as a statutory body in the Health sector, explaining the HPCSA structure, functions and the Council’s position in National Health. The Councils mandate is to guide and regulate the health professions in the country in aspects pertaining to registration, education and training, professional conduct and ethical behaviour, ensuring continuing professional development, and fostering compliance with healthcare standards.
