The HPCSA is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Desmond Mathye as its President, following his election to serve for the remaining period of term of office, effective from 26 September 2024. He will serve until the current administration’s term of office concludes in 2025.
Dr Mathye, a distinguished leader in the healthcare sector, currently serves as the Chairperson of the Professional Board for Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Biokinetics (PPB). His academic qualifications are extensive and diverse, including a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy, a Bachelor of Laws, a Master of Early Childhood Intervention, a Master of Business Administration, and a PhD in Physiotherapy. He is currently studying towards his Masters in Law (LLM).
Dr Mathye’s long-standing association with the HPCSA spans nearly a decade, during which he has contributed significantly serving in various capacities:
- Member of the Professional Board for Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Biokinetics (PPB) (2015 – 2020)
- Chairperson of the Preliminary Committee (2015 – 2020)
- Member of the Education, Training & Registration Committee (ETRC) (2015 – 2020)
- Chairperson of the PPB (2020 – 2025)
- Member of the HPCSA Council (2020 – 2025)
- Remuneration Committee (REMCO), Information and Technology Steering Committee, and the Professional Practice Committee (PPC) (2020 – 2025)
- Member of the Compensation Fund Board (2024 – 2025)
Dr Anban Pillay, Deputy Director-General of the National Department of Health, congratulated Dr Mathye and assured him of the department’s full support. “We are confident that his leadership will strengthen Council in maintaining the highest standards of healthcare, and the Department of Health is ready to support him throughout the remaining period of this administration’s term of office,” said Dr Pillay.
In welcoming the new President to his new role, the Registrar of the HPCSA, Dr Magome Masike, said: “We are delighted to have Dr Mathye stepping into this role at this critical period. His exemplary leadership and extensive experience within the HPCSA will help steer the organisation toward achieving its goals. We wish him all the best as he leads Council for the remainder of this administration.”
In accepting his new role, Dr Mathye expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in him and reaffirmed his commitment to upholding Council’s mandate. “I am honoured by this appointment and accept the responsibility with humility and dedication. I will do my utmost to align our work with the HPCSA’s mission and vision and look forward to collaborating with all stakeholders to achieve our objectives”.
His wealth of experience and deep understanding of the HPCSA position him to lead Council effectively, signalling the HPCSA’s continued commitment to maintaining professional excellence and ensuring the highest standards of healthcare in the country.
