Confusion around prescription cleared up

Dental therapists can prescribe medicines – providing they stick to the official list.

The HPCSA has retracted a note published in the Dental Therapy, Oral Hygiene and Dental Assisting Newsletter 2014/2015 which cautioned dental therapists against prescribing medicines. Dental therapists are indeed allowed to prescribe medicines – as long as they are on the list approved by the Medicines Control Council and published by the Minister of Health in the Government Gazette (No 36827) of 13 September 2013.
