Updated Ethical Guidelines

The HPCSA Professional Practice Division has published two revised guideline booklets to support practitioners in navigating complex clinical and technological decisions.

What has changed? Booklet 7 provides updated direction on when and how treatment may be withheld or withdrawn, particularly in cases where life-prolonging interventions offer limited benefit or compromise patient dignity.

Why does this matter? Practitioners are increasingly faced with decisions involving various treatment options and medical interventions, and these guidelines help determine what best serves the patient’s interests.

Alongside this, Booklet 20 outlines ethical expectations for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare. Who is it for? All practitioners using or engaging with AI-driven tools. Where and how should it be applied? In ways that safeguard patient confidentiality, uphold professional judgement, and support equitable, high-quality care.

Both revised booklets are now available on the HPCSA website.
