The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) is a statutory body, established in terms of the Health Professions Act and is committed to protecting the public and guiding the professions.
The HPCSA, in conjunction with its 12 Professional Boards, is committed to promoting the health of the population, determining standards of professional education and training, and setting and maintaining excellent standards of ethical and professional practice.
In terms of section 19A (1)b of the Health Professions Act 56 of 1974, all healthcare practitioners registered with the HPCSA are mandated to pay their annual fees. Currently, the HPCSA through its Call Centre has been engaging with healthcare practitioners whose annual fees are outstanding. Based on the Act, failure to comply will result with the HPCSA having to suspend a healthcare practitioner. Suspension from the register means the healthcare practitioner may not practise his or her profession in South Africa until his/her name has been restored to the practitioner’s register. Practising your profession without registration constitutes as a criminal offence that is punishable by law.
In terms of the Regulations promulgated as Government Notice No. R297 of 14 March 2008, should a practitioner be suspended from the register due to non – payment of annual fees, the following should be applied:
“The restoration fee payable by a practitioner if he/she applies for the restoration of his/her name to the Register from which it was suspended:
- within a period of six months after the suspension date, shall be equivalent to two times the applicable annual fee for the current year, plus the outstanding fee, if any;
- after a period of six months, but within 12 months of the suspension date, shall be equivalent to four times the applicable annual fee for the current year, plus outstanding annual fees, if any;
- After a period of more than 12 months of the suspension date, shall be equivalent to five times the applicable annual fee for the current year, plus the outstanding fees if any.”
