The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) is not in favour of solving disputes and disagreements with strikes.
As a regulatory body with a mandate to guide healthcare practitioners and protect the public, the HPCSA empathetically condemns any strike action by any healthcare professional.
“We condemn the strike action that took place. Through neglect, the patients’ lives were put at risk,” says Raveen Naidoo, chairperson of the Professional Board for Emergency Care.
Emergency care practitioners are reminded that emergency care is an essential service, and are therefore, not permitted to participate in any strike action. The Professional Board for Emergency Care views this as a serious offence and personnel involved in any strike actions will face charges of unprofessional and unethical conduct.
