The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) participated in the 15th International Association of Medical Regulatory Authority (IAMRA) Conference to gauge benchmarks around regulation. The Conference was held from the 6-9 November 2023 under the theme, Regulation in a disrupted world: Challenges and Opportunities.
IAMRA has over one hundred members worldwide and promotes effective medical regulation worldwide by supporting best practices, innovation, collaboration, and knowledge sharing in the interest of public safety in support of the medical profession. The challenge for medical regulators is to create relevant and effective systems that can respond to the rapidly changing environment in which physicians work, changes in both healthcare and communication technologies, and evolving healthcare delivery systems.
The HPCSA‘s attendance of IAMRA forms part of their Stakeholder Engagement Plan of engaging international health sector regulatory bodies and related associations to be able to benchmark its regulatory standards, operations, rules and regulations.
The HPCSA was represented at the Conference by a diversified delegation with consideration to continuity, roles and responsibilities. IAMRA exists to support Medical Regulatory Authorities (MRA) in their endeavour to improve regulations. Through scientific, educational, and collaborative activities, IAMRA strives to encourage best practices amongst MRA’s and to respond to both current and future needs.
The conference provided the opportunity of knowledge sharing through the various topics that were discussed such as, medical research, healthcare policies, patient care, and the use of Artificial Intelligence in medical regulation.
These events form an integral part of learning for all health-care professionals. While practitioners can still learn from personal experiences, real life meetings do provide a unique opportunity to share experiences and knowledge.
The conference strongly reaffirmed that health, which is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being – not merely the absence of disease or infirmity – is a fundamental human right. The attainment of the highest possible level of health is the most important worldwide social goal which requires the collaboration across the social, economic and health sectors.
