HPCSA Stakeholder Engagements Help Strengthen Practitioner Connections

On Wednesday, 28 May 2025, the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) hosted its annual Council Stakeholder Engagement at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC).

This important event provided an interactive platform for nearly 400 registered healthcare practitioners to engage directly with Council members, Executive Management, and core departments, reaffirming Council’s commitment to transparency, accessibility, and accountability.

The primary goal was to facilitate meaningful dialogue between the HPCSA Council and practitioners by sharing key organisational updates, recent achievements, and guidance on Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Additionally, the engagement addressed common concerns and queries, fostering collaboration and gathering feedback to improve HPCSA’s services and support.

Council Members, executive management, and representatives from the 12 Professional Boards were present throughout the event. The exhibition area featured dedicated stalls for each Board, staffed by Deputy Company Secretaries offering board-specific assistance. Registration and CPD officials were also on-site to resolve practitioner enquiries in real-time. Attendees earned four (4) CEUs for Ethics by participating.

Feedback was overwhelmingly positive: 87% of respondents expressed satisfaction with the event’s organisation and content. Practitioners appreciated the clear communication before the event and valued the opportunity to interact directly with Council. This engagement reinforced practitioners’ trust in the HPCSA as a transparent and responsive regulator.

In evaluating the event’s effectiveness, several constructive recommendations emerged to enhance future engagements, including:

  • Allowing practitioners to submit questions in advance, improving presenter preparation.
  • Sharing presentation slides post-event for easier reference.
  • Increasing board-specific sessions to better address profession-related queries.
  • Introducing a verification tool or app to authenticate practitioner credentials, reducing fraud risk.
  • Aligning the CEU cycle with registration timelines to minimize confusion.
  • Enhancing the HPCSA online portal by clarifying CPD expiry rules, removing outdated content, and providing better user support.
  • Extending Q&A sessions and dedicating more time to complex topics such as AI and CPD policies.
  • Offering hybrid event formats to enable broader participation from practitioners unable to travel.
  • Continuing the exhibition model with all 12 Professional Boards to encourage direct engagement.
  • Collecting questions during RSVP to streamline discussions.

Implementing some of these recommendations will strengthen our engagement with healthcare professionals, boost stakeholder trust, and improve service delivery. The success of this year’s event underscores the importance of these interactions in supporting the professional development and regulatory needs of South Africa’s diverse healthcare workforce.

We invite all registered practitioners to actively participate in future engagements and share their feedback. Your input is invaluable in shaping Council’s initiatives and ensuring that the Council remains a trusted partner in your professional journey.
